Summary[]

Babar tells Alexander about the time he had to make a decision that was difficult but important as well.

Plot[]

It’s the Triplets' birthday and they are all celebrating with their friends. Alexander wants to sit with his friends but feels that he should be at the helm of the table with Pom and Flora. He goes back and forth and makes different excuses. He goes outside and Babar talks to him, saying that he also was faced with a difficult decision, exactly like that.

Back when Babar was younger, Celesteville was getting ready to throw its annual ball, and all are excited. Babar is getting ready to ask Celeste as his date. Cornelius and Pompadour are discussing the seating arrangements for the ball. Next they go over the schedule and tell Babar that he is to chaperone Midge, the Gorilla King's daughter. Babar said that he already asked Celeste to the ball. Cornelius says that the Gorilla King is the Guest of Honor at the ball tonight, and Babar's priority is to keep the Princess Midge entertained. Later that day, Babar goes to talk to Madame about the position he is in, she tells him that he must do what he thinks is the right thing to do, and that Celeste will understand his decision. He has to tell Celeste he is cancelling, Zephir comes with him for support. He tries to tell her but when he sees just how happy she is, he can't. When he gets back to the Palace, he has to tell Pompadour and Cornelius he didn't or rather couldn't cancel his date with Celeste. However, Pompadour and Cornelius are busy with the party preparations to listen.

With one hour before the ball starts Babar along with Arthur and Zephir try to come up with how he can be with both girls and what Celeste will think when she finds out. Suddenly Babar has an idea, he will spend time with both girls, but one at a time. Arthur supports the idea but Zephir thinks that it will never work. With the party starting, Babar is free to meet Princess Midge, especially since Arthur took Celeste's shoe's. Just as he is introduced to Princess Midge and she asks him to dance with her, Celeste arrives. His plan goes into action, even Arthur pitches in by conducting the orchestra, things soon become a little crazy and Celeste sees him dancing with Midge. Eventually, Babar has to choose The Belle of the Ball, which he is terrified to hear. If he doesn't choose Celeste, he'll break her heart, but he doesn't choose Midge, the Gorilla King will break his arms. After consideration, he chooses Madame, saying that she will always be Belle of the Ball, which everyone applauds. Midge, who isn't hurt by this, asks Zephir to dance, but Celeste walks away broken hearted. While dancing with Madame, she tells him that she understands what happened and that he must tell Celeste he truth. When he finds Celeste, he apologizes and explains why he did it. She forgives him and they go back to the ball. Zephir and Midge are having a wonderful time and even the Gorilla King is enjoying himself.

After the story, Alexander decides to tell his friends the truth. Celeste comes out of the dining room asking if they would like some cake, Alexander runs back into the dining room and both Babar and Celeste join the party.
