Plot[]
With the school's basketball season arriving, both Pom and Alexander tryout and while Alexander does make the team, Pom does not. Pom practices playing basketball with Alexander's help, because of the big game. However he needs to be ready to face one big challenge, telling his parents he's actually the towel boy.
Summary[]
One evening, Pom is practicing his shooting for the basketball tryouts when Alexander show up, and tells Pom, their mother wants them to come inside. Pom says he needs 5 more minutes, Alexander then takes the ball and begins to show off and make impossible shots even when Pom asks Alexander, numerous times to give back the ball. Pom warns Alexander, he'll tell on Father if doesn't give back the ball, Alexander then drops it and runs inside. When his father calls him inside, Pom asks for a few more minutes, as the tryouts are tomorrow. Babar agrees but says only a few minutes, as Celeste may need to agree as well.
The next day at the school gym, Pom and Alexander along with many other boys are trying out for the team. Alexander does very well during the tryouts, but Pom can't seem to keep up with his Brother. After the tryouts, the coach tells them if they hear their names called, they made the team. All of the boys made the team, but when Pom hears his name called, he is given the position of towel boy, which he is saddened by. Alexander assures him, he can still practice with everyone and may even make the team then.
At the Palace, Babar is feeding the fish, Celeste says that Alexander must have forgotten, suddenly he bursts into the room and tells his parents he made the team. Babar and Celeste are glad to hear that, and as Pom walks by the door sadly, his parents asks how he did, and Pom says that he made the team and when Alexander tries to say he didn't, Pom stops him. Outside Alexander tells Pom their father will find out the truth but he tells Alexander by than he'll be playing, he just needs some extra practice. Alexander eagerly tells Pom, he'll help him, but Pom knows something is up as his brother only helps if he gets something in return. Alexander says he'll help him if he gets Pom's new Dr Frankentusk's poster, he is hesitant, but since it means buying his brother's silence, Pom agrees.
After dark they go to the school's gym and practice and Pom has trouble shooting. Alexander decides to practice his defense, as Pom was having a hard time running after Alexander. While he does get slightly fed up with Alexander constant showing off, Pom gets better each time. Unfortunately though, the coach still won't let Pom play yet and their first big game is this week. At home Pom tells his father he doesn't have to go (mainly so Babar won't know he didn't make the team) but Babar says he wouldn't miss it for the world and tells Pom that Pompadour has already fixed his schedule so that he can go. While Celeste and Pom sit outside she asks him if everything is all right but Pom doesn't have the heart to tell her he didn't make the team. Eventually the big game comes and both Babar and Celeste see that Pom is the towel boy, they now understand why he didn't tell them.
At first, Pom is embarrassed and disappointed his parents found out, but when one of the other players can't play Pom steps in and thanks to all his practice with Alexander, Pom helps the team win. After the game Babar goes to see Pom, he apologizes to Babar for not telling the truth, but Babar assures him, towel boy or player, he'll support his son no matter what.
