Babar Wiki

Pompadour is Babar's royal valet and servant. He is in charge of the Royal Protocol guidelines around the palace, as well as in Celesteville. He is frequently seen around Cornelius while performing paperwork and scheduling appointments. He is the one who arranges Babar's countless meetings, counsels, and interviews on a daily basis. Unlike most elephants he does not have any tusks, the reason behind this remains unknown.

Appearances[]

He wears an orange lapel with golden lining, a ruffled shirt, light orange vest and pants, white socks and black shoes. He has an elaborate collection of wigs, and wears it as one of his most prized assets. His other prized asset is his monocle, which he wore even in the old kingdom, he is seldom seen without it. He has also been seen in several episodes with his trunk curled and even shown in many episodes holding a cane.

Biography[]

In the old kingdom, Pompadour was also a minister of the old king. When Babar was born, he suggested to name the baby Pierre, in fact, he was the only one who wanted that name. While he wasn't close to Babar when he was little, Pompadour was still patient with him. When Babar returned to the jungle after living in the city, Pompadour was very happy to see him again. When Babar tried to explain to the Old King they had to outthink the hunter, Pompadour tells Babar he has forgotten what it was like living in the jungle. He was very sad when the Old King died, and when the elephants were caught by the hunter, he was scared about what would happen next as they would either go to an ivory dealer or placed in a zoo or the circus. After the hunter was beaten, he knew when they returned home that Babar was the perfect next king. When building the new kingdom, he made several suggestions to speed up the building of the city and was happy when his ideas were supported.

After Babar was made King, both he and Cornelius looked after Babar (mainly because Babar lost his mother and was still young), even to this day he is willing to help Babar, whatever the situation. However, in Double the Guards, when there was thought to be a Kingnapper on the loose (Celeste sent a fork flying into a poster of Babar when she was left to pay the bill), he and Cornelius upgraded the security and refused to let Babar leave the palace ground, even alone, in the end, he and Cornelius put an end to the high security. Although, he can doubt himself, when Babar left only him in charge of the children during a storm, Pompadour asked if someone better qualified could take care of them.

He has shown to accumulate an extensive amount of understanding with diplomacy, in competition with Basil in this department. He is very adherent to rules, and becomes distraught if anyone breaks them, especially in King Tuttle's Vote. He is also against radical ideas of any sort, even if King Babar is in the question. He is quite organized, trusts Babar excessively, and is almost always in agreement with him. His quick and sensitive style often proves to confuse and incapacitate Cornelius (as seen in Cruel to be Kind and in The One that Got Away). Despite his prim and proper attitude, he occasionally shows his fun side,as shown in Mango Madness. He can also be easily frightened, such as the time when Rhinoland "declared" war on Celesteville1, or when he was afraid that the Polimosh was haunting them in the jungle2. He also cares about the children very much such as in Alexander the Great, when the children and Arthur flew away in a plane into the uncharted jungle, he refused to rest until the children returned home safely.

He is an influencing character with great standards, often with unrealistic expectations. He is often actively against Rataxes and his kingdom, however seldom finds himself in agreement with his claims, especially in Conga the Terrible. He is also bothered by the fact that Cornelius never trusts him with secrets, even if they weren't originally from him. In episodes like The Coin and in The Old Lady Vanishes , Pompadour exclaims in surprise at the climax why Cornelius didn't let him in on the explanatory sequence of the issue at hand. He is thoroughly recognized by his constant use of extravagant vocabulary and his elegant sense of humor. He occasionally toys with Cornelius about his seniority, specifically with his forgetfulness, however this sometimes reaches a dangerous limit (as proven in Mango Madness and Friendly Agreement). Distraction may be tempted to move him away from his wishes, although he mostly attempts to remove any sort of obstacle which may come in his path. He has a habit of calling King Babar "Sire" (normally when asking for his permission on a certain concept), but this had a greater presence in much earlier episodes.
