Role in the Episode[]
The Way-Out Bird is heard crying when a young Babar and Zephir have climbed up cliffs. She cries upon receiving those visitors, and Babar apologizes for possibly upsetting her. She thanks Babar for caring, but says she is crying because she is happy. When Babar explains the reason for his and Zephir's arrival, it turns out the request is her tail feather. Because of what was going on in Babar's heart, the bird gives him her last tail feather. Babar doesn't know how to thank her, but she says he and Zephir did by visiting. As the boys leave, arriving are another pair: Lord Rataxes and Basil. Rataxes scolds her for crying and demands her tail feather, and she is offended. She says to ask nicely. So Rataxes tells her to give him the feather, and has Basil finish with "please." The bird brushes off the please as insincere, but commends him for trying. She then apologizes because she had given her last tail feather away. She appears offended when the two rhinos leave without saying good-bye.
